Projects in a high-traffic area generally will require a harder wood than a decorative surface. Hardness of wood, as explained by the Janka scale - which measures the hardness on both the top and bottom surface and gives ranges in number from the softest to the hardest - basically giving you with an overall view of what wood types can withstand the most wear.
